If you are the creator of original content, you can add text on original article to show you are going to publish such content in GFDL(in English).
You may also refer an example in this Baidu Baike article, that was published under GFDL so can be used in Wikipedia.

This is a local version of the Wikimania conference in Japan. It is scheduled to be held sometime during 21-23 November this year in Tokyo, Japan (most likely to be one-day long). (more details) The location is yet to be fixed, but currently we are negotiating with the University of Tokyo to rent some of the classrooms/halls for this event. Possible themes of the presentations by non-Japanese speakers would be the difference on how copyright violations are treated / how the mischievous users are handled / sociology of the users / what kind of articles are well written compared to other languages, etc. Of course other kinds of presentations are welcome. Cantonese people? It depends, there are some many Cantonese around the world. It depends on which region you are talking about. For those Cantoneses who live outside of mainland China, a lots of them can speak English, for the one in mainland China, they are catching up now. • Hi, I have my user preferences "language" configured to English (so I get mediawiki messagens in English) and my "variant" configured to zh-cn (so I expect to see the article text in simplified characters). However that doesn't work and I only see the traditional characters in the article text. The same happens when I'm not logged in and click on the tab to select zh-cn. The conversion only works if I'm logged in AND choose zh-cn both as language and variant. I think that's a bug on the system.

PS: A temporary glue would be to add another parameter on the tabs making URLs end with (&language=zh-cn&variant=zh-cn) instead of just (&variant=zh-cn)

After installing a zh-cn browser, when I'm not logged, the characters now change to simplified just by clicking the tabs, as it should be. The language in Preference only changes the mediawiki interface. The trad/simplified conversion in an article is by switching the tabs at the top next to the 'watch/unwatch' tab. Once you are logged in and select a 'variant', it should be the one you see next time you log in (i.e. becomes 'default' of your account) irrgardless of your system/browser.—Ben.MQ 2009年2月13日 (五) 10:07 (UTC)回复[回复]

The Chinese language Wikipedia is the 12th biggest by article count, having 257,000 articles and an annual growth of +43%. On position 11 is the Swedish language Wikipedia, having 319,000 articles but an annual growth of only +12%. If my calculation is correct and this difference in growth rate remains, the two will both have 350,000 articles on April 16, 2010. It could happen a little sooner or later, but it will happen. I have a question about the Chinese language.

How exactly does the Chinese language handle foreign (English) words? Languages like Spanish, German and French are easily able to adapt to new words because they use the same type of writing system (Roman), and Japanese is able to write words from English origin with their Katakana alphabet.

So how do the Chinese handle it? Does the Chinese language also have some sort of Katakana alphabet? Or does the Chinese language actually make new symbols for it?

• U own a great question that have has a simple solution in Chinese language, I may say.

Without any alphbet first to spell words then to express meanings, we directly use characters, each of them are independent and pronounces only one sound. As handling words of other languages, we with our styles try the best to pick up their exact meanings, then interpret them with several characters, if one can not do the job.

For example, in 字母 that stands for alphabet, 字 means words, 母 as mother. Alphabet thus becomes the mother of words. Exceptions of just simulating the pronunciations exist in the cases of proper nouns and a few others like in the field of science. Such as 巴拉克‧歐巴馬 is to Barack Obama, the six characters present sequently to the sounds of ba-rac-k o-ba-ma. However by the word Wikipedia, 維基 do the same to mimic wi-ki, 百科全書 are to translate encyclopedia. The full Chinese writing is 維基百科全書.

• It seems to me that:
  1. 轉寫 is to change, at the alphabet to alphabet basis, words from different alphabetic systems.
  2. Transcription is to change within the same language from the sounds to the texts, or otherwise.
  3. 音譯 (transliteration) makes the change based on the sounds, while 意譯 (translation or paraphrase) does on the meanings. They both aren't necessary between aphabetic systems.
  4. BTW in zh-hant/zh-hans, zh indicates zhong-wen (中文, ie, the Chinese language), Han (漢, ie, the largest race in China which invented/uses zhong-wen so far), t (traditional), s (simplified). #

Dear friends, I do not recall where read about this magical square and its attribution to Yang Hui. en:Magic square#Albrecht_D.C3.BCrer.27s_magic_square states:

"The order-4 magic square in Albrecht Dürer's engraving Melencolia I is believed to be the first seen in European art. It is very similar to Yang Hui's square, which was created in China about 250 years before Dürer's time."

Earlier, in June, I posted an estimate that the Chinese Wikipedia would soon outgrow the Swedish one. However, recent growth in zh.wp has not been as large as I assumed. Chinese growth is still larger than in Swedish, but by a smaller margin, so the catch up will take longer. • The statistics is interesting and started with a nice viewpoint. The logics behind those numbers confuse me, still I can offer two remarks, though no question asked.
  1. Certainly the official political restraints are easy suspects, but it seems hard to account for the acute changes of the growth here.
  2. There is no zh. wp article written in English, and little possibility of many robot-translated to Chinese. The related technology isn't so high as I know. #

Hi. I would need help of somebody from Chinese Wikipedia who is skilled in translation from English to Chinese and also can use Photoshop program to change images. Few years ago, I draw a map of Banat region (in Romania and Serbia): http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05.png and Chinese Wiki user Xieza translated this map into Chinese: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05-zh.png However, I recently created an improved version of original English-language version of the map (which you can see on the map page of English version) and I think that this improved version should be translated into Chinese as well and that old Chinese language version map should be replaced with the improved version. So, is anybody here able to translate improved version of the map into Chinese and to upload it instead of the old Chinese language version? Aha. Seems that Sânnicolau Mare has two versions of the name - the other one is Sînnicolau Mare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sannicolau_Mare and the second version is translated by google into simplified chinese as 大圣尼古拉 and into traditional Chinese as 大聖尼古拉 - so, which version we should use? The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

What this means for you

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. It is because most of the name reactions with English names are more commonly used than those with Chinese names. For instance, Diels-Alder反应 has far more search results than 狄尔斯-阿尔德反应. Wikinews proposes a script to display the Wiktionary definition in a small board, when one double-click on a word. It's already been installed on more than 13 wikimedia sites, for example in the following Wiktionairies gadgets: in French and in Italian.

To add it here, we should vote for an administrator, in:

Okay, there's a problem. Since Chinese (as long as other east-Asian languages like ja or kr) does not separate "words" with spaces, it's impossible to select a "word" (mostly one or two characters) just by double-clicking on it. In my experiments, double clicking seems to work fine in japanese (at least in firefox. I imagine this is something browser dependant). Its unclear if it works in chinese. At some point i intend to implement an alternate method of selecting words. Bawolff (留言)

In Japanese I think if you double click on a character it will select all the other character of the same type (Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji, or western characters), but they are not one word. 你好! I am sysop of Wikipedia in Kalmyk (Oirat) language. Could somebody explain how new, modern words like "photography", "bus", "password", "file", "Wikipedia", "computer" appear in Chinese language? It looks like almoust no loan words in Chinese exist. Is any algorithm of creation of new words in Chinese? Are new words phonetically simplified version of origin (Bodhidharma -> Potidama, Latin -> Lati, Dharma -> Fa?) or they are word-to-word translation? Hi Huuchin. The translation of neologisms into Chinese mainly follows two principles:

• free translation (意译, translation according to meaning)
• phonetic transcription (音译, translation according to sound, for "proper nouns" including names of people, places etc.)

eg.:

photography -> 摄影 (literally "taking in images", 摄: take in, absorb; 影: image, shadow)

bus -> 公共汽车 (literally "public vehicle", 公共: public——公: public; 共: together with, to share; 汽车: vehicle; 汽: steam; 车: cart (originally), car (derived))

also: 客车 (literally "vehicle for guests", 客: guest, traveller; 车: car)

also: 巴士 (ba1 shi4, phonetic)

password -> 密码 (literally "undisclosed code", 密: undisclosed; 码: code)

file -> 文件 (literally "pieces of writing", 文: writing; 件: (pieces of))

Wikipedia -> 维基百科 (维基: wei1 ji1, selectively phonetic, also symbolism, 维: maintain, preserve; 基: foundation) (百科: shorthand for 百科全书 encyclopedia, literally "a complete book of a hundred subjects", 百: hundred (symbolic); 科: subject; 全: complete; 书: book)

computer -> 计算机 (literally "calculating machine", 计算: calculation; 计: count; 算: calculate; 机: machine)

Bodhidharma -> 菩提达摩 (pu2 ti2 da2 mo2, a long-established method for translating Buddhism terminologies into Chinese (since ancient times), specific characters were invented and chosen for this purpose, not exactly sound-matching, hence alternative versions often co-exist)

In the past neologisms have almost always been translated according to the meanings that they have (as a way to preserve the Chinese language), but as the monopoly of the English language and Latin alphabet becomes increasingly prevalent there is an increasing trend to lean towards phonetic transcription as this makes the words more easily recognisable (also because Chinese and English are linguistically different and word-to-word translations don't often make sense). There are institutions in the major Chinese-speaking political entities that regulate the translation of terminology and other neologisms into Chinese, but these organisations often have conflicting results in terms of the translations that they choose to prefer. This high degree of confusion/disorder is further exacerbated by the spread of Internet as it makes words that individuals themselves have translated (which contradict the results from official institutions) spread much faster than the recommended results that old, slow-reacting official institutions would have otherwise put up on their websites, months, years or decades after the neologisms have come into use.

Hi, I'm a kowp user. I can read 75% of 正體, but not good at simplified figures. I wanna read articles in classical characters always, so I got to 'my preferences' and changed the variant from 'zh' to 'zh-tw', and saved. There are two drop-boxes in preferences page. The first one is 界面语言 or Language is actually the interface language. The second drop-box 字体变换 is for the content of the page. please ensure that you have set both (or at least the second) to zh-tw. that should give you what you want. —Ben.MQ 2009年12月4日 (五) 07:21 (UTC)回复[回复]
