I made a small but significant addition to the page on 富拉尼人, but frankly I'm punching above my weight here. I think my grammar and the terms are correct; I know the contents of the edits are accurate, though they could be expanded on. Any corrections or suggestions encouraged (in the spirit of Wikipedia). Also if any fluent Chinese speakers/writers are interested in expanding/enhancing/creating articles on African languages an peoples, I'd be interested in collaborating (as time permits). --A12n (留言) 2009年3月13日 (五) 17:34 (UTC)

Hello, this is most likely relevant to Chinese speaking Wikipedians living inside/near Japan. I would like to let you know about Wikimedia Conference Japan. This is a local version of the Wikimania conference in Japan. It is scheduled to be held sometime during 21-23 November this year in Tokyo, Japan (most likely to be one-day long). The details are being worked out at meta:Wikimedia Conference Japan and the mailing list, and the relevant translations are provided in meta:Wikimedia Conference Japan/en, meta:User:Makotoy/Wikimedia Conference Japan. Although a major potion of the participants is expected to be Japanese, we would like to have non-Japanese speaking presenters and/or audiences as much as possible. For example comparison between different language editions would be a great enlightenment to largely monolinguistic Japanese users. Please feel free to contact us in the talk pages or through wikimail. We are grateful if you could help us spread the word about this conference (translation into different languages, advertisement suggestions, etc.) regards,--Makotoy (留言) 2009年5月17日 (日) 17:25 (UTC) (contact me at meta:User:Makotoy)

The Chinese language Wikipedia is the 12th biggest by article count, having 257,000 articles and an annual growth of +43%. On position 11 is the Swedish language Wikipedia, having 319,000 articles but an annual growth of only +12%. If my calculation is correct and this difference in growth rate remains, the two will both have 350,000 articles on April 16, 2010. It could happen a little sooner or later, but it will happen. How should we prepare for this event? Perhaps with a competition or a WikiProject of some kind? Any ideas? --LA2 (留言) 2009年6月21日 (日) 21:49 (UTC)

Greetings, Chinese wikipedia.
I have a question about the Chinese language.
How exactly does the Chinese language handle foreign (English) words? Languages like Spanish, German and French are easily able to adapt to new words because they use the same type of writing system (Roman), and Japanese is able to write words from English origin with their Katakana alphabet.
So how do the Chinese handle it? Does the Chinese language also have some sort of Katakana alphabet? Or does the Chinese language actually make new symbols for it?
For example, how do you write "Wikipedia" in Chinese? --87.211.160.4 (留言) 2009年7月22日 (三) 01:10 (UTC)
Without any alphbet first to spell words then to express meanings, we directly use characters, each of them are independent and pronounces only one sound. As handling words of other languages, we with our styles try the best to pick up their exact meanings, then interpret them with several characters, if one can not do the job.
For example, in 字母 that stands for alphabet, 字 means words, 母 as mother. Alphabet thus becomes the mother of words. Exceptions of just simulating the pronunciations exist in the cases of proper nouns and a few others like in the field of science. Such as 巴拉克‧歐巴馬 is to Barack Obama, the six characters present sequently to the sounds of ba-rac-k o-ba-ma. However by the word Wikipedia, 維基 do the same to mimic wi-ki, 百科全書 are to translate encyclopedia. The full Chinese writing is 維基百科全書.
I do hope it'd makes sense to you. :) Philinwiki (留言) 2009年7月28日 (二) 18:16 (UTC)

Why is that? And perhaps "Guestbook" isn't the best word to title the pages without doubts in English. I, a native Chinese and a new hand in Chinese Wikipedia, feel quite confused. But besides greetings in here, it's very good to write at one's will for any non-Chinese speaker. That's for sure. #

Earlier, in June, I posted an estimate that the Chinese Wikipedia would soon outgrow the Swedish one. However, recent growth in zh.wp has not been as large as I assumed. Chinese growth is still larger than in Swedish, but by a smaller margin, so the catch up will take longer. In fact, Chinese growth is so uneven that I can't predict when it will happen. --LA2 (留言) 2009年9月1日 (二) 21:17 (UTC)

Hi. I would need help of somebody from Chinese Wikipedia who is skilled in translation from English to Chinese and also can use Photoshop program to change images. Few years ago, I draw a map of Banat region (in Romania and Serbia): http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05.png and Chinese Wiki user Xieza translated this map into Chinese: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05-zh.png However, I recently created an improved version of original English-language version of the map (which you can see on the map page of English version) and I think that this improved version should be translated into Chinese as well and that old Chinese language version map should be replaced with the improved version. So, is anybody here able to translate improved version of the map into Chinese and to upload it instead of the old Chinese language version? Thank you. - PANONIAN -—以上未簽名的留言是由212.69.0.211(對話 貢獻)於2009-09-20T11:31:55加入。

Hm, but if the map has zh in its name, then which name versions I should use from google translation - traditional or simplified? - PANONIAN - 212.69.0.211 (留言) 今天, 03:11 AM (UTC+8)
I finished my map now, you can see it here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05-zh.png - I hope that you can compare it with original English version to see are there any mistakes in the translation: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banat05.png - I used traditional Chinese in the map because of the following reasons: 1. google translation page was not able to translate all Serbian and Romanian names into simplified Chinese, but it was able to translate them into traditional Chinese, so I used names that I had, 2. original author of the Chinese map version also used traditional Chinese (for example traditional name 基金達 used for Kikinda, not simplified one, which would be 基金达), but he, however, used simplified name 蒂米什瓦拉 for Timişoara instead traditional one, which would be 蒂米甚瓦拉. I tried to use traditional variants in all names, so I hope that you can check if all names are translated well, and if anybody have any suggestions how this map can be improved, please post your suggestions here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File_talk:Banat05-zh.png Thank you. - PANONIAN - 81.18.53.52 (留言) 2009年9月22日 (二) 11:36 (UTC)
We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly
The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.
When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.
We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Languageissues. The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.
PS This text has been approved by Naoko, Brion and Siebrand. Thanks, GerardM (留言) 2009年9月30日 (三) 21:51 (UTC)
The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.
The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner
Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.
Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.
When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. Localising is more efficient because we have innovated the process to make you more efficient; there is text explaining about messages and we have applied AJAX technology to reduce the number of clicks you have to make. —以上未簽名的留言是于2009年10月1日 (四) 00:04 (UTC)之前加入的。

你好! I am sysop of Wikipedia in Kalmyk (Oirat) language. Could somebody explain how new, modern words like "photography", "bus", "password", "file", "Wikipedia", "computer" appear in Chinese language? It looks like almoust no loan words in Chinese exist. Is any algorithm of creation of new words in Chinese? Are new words phonetically simplified version of origin (Bodhidharma -> Potidama, Latin -> Lati, Dharma -> Fa?) or they are word-to-word translation? I am interested because during localisation of MediaWiki these words are needed. Thanks, Huuchin (留言) 2009年11月24日 (二) 15:45 (UTC)
eg.:
In the past neologisms have almost always been translated according to the meanings that they have (as a way to preserve the Chinese language), but as the monopoly of the English language and Latin alphabet becomes increasingly prevalent there is an increasing trend to lean towards phonetic transcription as this makes the words more easily recognisable (also because Chinese and English are linguistically different and word-to-word translations don't often make sense). There are institutions in the major Chinese-speaking political entities that regulate the translation of terminology and other neologisms into Chinese, but these organisations often have conflicting results in terms of the translations that they choose to prefer. This high degree of confusion/disorder is further exacerbated by the spread of Internet as it makes words that individuals themselves have translated (which contradict the results from official institutions) spread much faster than the recommended results that old, slow-reacting official institutions would have otherwise put up on their websites, months, years or decades after the neologisms have come into use.
Hope this helps. —60.229.108.36 (留言) 2009年11月28日 (六) 02:00 (UTC)
